All this weekend, the San Diego Tet Festival will take place at Mira Mesa Community Park.
Friday (today), Sergio & Clarice Assad will perform two shows at the Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. Mexican rock band El Tri performs at Soma. The film The Life and Times of Runoko Rashidi will be screened at the World Beat Center. Daniel, Me Estas Matando performs at the House of Blues. Mexican grupero bands Bronco & Liberacion will perform at the Magnolia in El Cajon. Mexican singer/songwriter Pedro Fernández will be at Harrah's. La Sinaloense Bar & Grill will host their Norteño Fest with six Norteño groups performing.
Saturday and Sunday, the International Cottages and the House of China will host their annual Chinese New Year Festival. At the Sunshine Brooks Theatre in Oceanside, there will be a presentation spotlighting Oceanside Black Firsts.
Saturday, the 4th Annual City Heights Multi-Cultural Festival of Love will take place at Henwood Memorial Park. At the Chinese Historical Museum, the San Diego Storytellers will present Chinese folktales of Luck, Love, and Good Fortune. There will be a Black History Celebration and Author Talk at the Logan Heights Library. The film Tiananmen Mission will be screened at The Lot. Comedian Masood Boomgaard will be channeling his alter-ego "Self-help Singh" at Mic Drop Comedy. The Festa Do Bom Jesus Valentines Theme will take place at Upses Portuguese Hall in Point Loma. The tribute bands Abbey Road and Jumping Jack Flash will present a Beatles vs. Stones music showdown at the Magnolia in El Cajon (it's a fun show). Ska band Matamoska will perform at the Holding Company. There will be a Reception for La Onda Arte Latino: Without Walls X Border Exhibit at the Studio Door.
Sunday, Mexican pop star Yuri will perform at the Balboa Theatre. Tropa Magica and Los Blender will play at Soda Bar.
Monday, Latino pop star Helado Negro will perform at the Music Box.
Tuesday, the Oceanside International Film Festival gets underway, and the festival will continue until the 24th. At UCSD, the Sama Sama Celebration will be a lecture and Master Class dance workshop put on by the Filipino arts organizations Samahan and PASACAT. The South Korean documentary Chosen will be shown at the UCSD School of Global Policy and Strategy. The UCSD Department of Visual Arts will host Carmen Cuenca & Andrea Torreblanc who will talk about Mexican arts.
Wednesday, Warwick's will host Booked for Lunch: Alex Michaelides. At the USD Humanities Center, Professor Angharad N. Valdivi will discuss Latina Girlhood in the Mainstream Media from Dora to Barbie. At UCSD's Park and Market, the Esto Somos (This is Us) event will feature 11 documentaries about the world of Popular Art Design in Mexico. There will be a Contra Dance Party at the Balboa Park Club. The all-female salsa band Sabrosas Latin Orchestra will perform at the Belly Up.
Next Thursday, the San Diego World Affairs Council will host Ambassador Jeffrey Davidow who will speak about The 2024 Elections in Mexico and the United States: Implications for the Bilateral Relationship. At CalPERS, there will be a panel discussion on Fair Housing, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Real Estate. There will be an online talk Archaeology Talk about the San Diego's Nathan Harrison Site and how it inspired muralists, historians, playwrights. At Logan Heights Library, César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández will discuss his book, Welcome to the Wretched: In Defense of the “Criminal Alien”. The classic film Divorzio all’italiana (Divorce Italian Style) will be screened at the Digital Gym. Popular travel writer Elizabeth Gilbert will give a talk at Balboa Theatre. Mexican bands Sonido Condor, BXS Bryndis, and Inter Mexico will perform at the Music Box.
Next Friday, N opens at the Point Loma Playhouse with performances continuing to March 10th.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the 41st Annual San Diego Chinese New Year Fair will take place downtown. Ballet performances of The Many Loves of Don Juan will be given at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla.
Next Saturday, the 2nd Annual SoCal Sumo Open will take place at the City Heights/Weingart Library and Performance Annex. The Afroture Exhibition at City College will showcase Black future perspectives in photography. At the North University Community Library, there will be an art talk on Botticelli and Florence, 1434 to 1494. There will be a Lunar New Year Celebration at the Hsi Fang Temple. The 3rd Annual Tribute to the Reggae Legends will take place at the Worldbeat Center. At the Upses Portuguese Hall in Point Loma, there will be a Portuguese Kids Comedy Show.
Next Sunday, the House of USA at the International Cottages in Balboa Park will host their annual African American Heritage Celebration. San Diego Dance Theatre will host a Flamenco Music and Dance Tablao Cuadro Workshop. At the Central Library, Professor Samantha Springs will give a talk on Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, there will be a Carnatic Vocal Concert. Mediterranean Nights at Saffrono Lounge Bar and Grill will feature Flamenco with Roots, Habibi Fusion, Monica & Sophia, Natasha and more. Peruvian music group Los Ardiles will perform at the Joan B. Kroc Theatre. The Hill Street Country Club will present Sound and Liberation: Black History Month Edition, a night of experimental performance celebrating Black expression. At the Persian Cultural Center, they will screen and discuss the film My Happy Family.
Local theatrical productions include English at the Old Globe, Outside Mullingar at Lamb's Players in Coronado, Chapatti at Scripps Ranch Theatre, Fiddler on the Roof at San Diego Musical Theatre, and N at the Point Loma Playhouse (opens 2/23).
